Understanding Cannabinoids

Cannabinoids are chemical compounds found in cannabis. THC and CBD are the best known, but cannabis can contain many others—including THCA, CBDA, CBG, CBN, CBC, THCV, and CBDV.

What Is a Cannabinoid?

Cannabinoids interact with the body in different ways. Some may be intoxicating, some are generally non-intoxicating, and many remain less studied than THC and CBD.

Phytocannabinoids

These are cannabinoids produced by the cannabis plant, including THC, CBD, CBG, CBC, CBN, THCV, and their acidic precursor forms.

Endocannabinoids

The human body also produces its own cannabinoid-like signaling compounds as part of the endocannabinoid system.

Label Names Matter

THCA is not the same label entry as THC, and CBDA is not the same as CBD. Heat can convert acidic cannabinoids into neutral forms.

Do Not Judge a Product by One Cannabinoid

The complete product matters: cannabinoid amounts, terpenes, dose, method of use, prior experience, and individual biology can all influence the experience.

Delta-9 THC

Also called: THC, Δ9-THC, Delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol

Delta-9 THC is the best-known psychoactive / intoxicating cannabinoid in cannabis. The amount, dose, and method of use strongly influence the experience.

Generally Non-Intoxicating

CBD

Also called: Cannabidiol

CBD is generally considered non-intoxicating. It may be sold alone or combined with THC and other cannabinoids in flower, oils, edibles, capsules, beverages, and topicals.

Acidic Precursor

THCA

Also called: Tetrahydrocannabinolic acid

THCA is found naturally in raw cannabis. Heating it through smoking, vaping, or cooking converts much of it into Delta-9 THC.

CBDA

Also called: Cannabidiolic acid

CBDA is the acidic precursor to CBD. Heat can convert much of it into CBD through a process called decarboxylation.

Minor and Less Familiar Cannabinoids

Other Names You May See on Labels

“Minor” usually means present in smaller amounts—not unimportant or proven to have a minor effect.

Generally Non-Intoxicating

CBG

Also called: Cannabigerol

CBG is a less common cannabinoid that usually appears in smaller amounts than THC or CBD. Research is still developing.

Acidic Precursor

CBGA

Also called: Cannabigerolic acid

CBGA is often described as an important starting compound because the plant uses it to form several other acidic cannabinoids.

Weakly Intoxicating or Unclear

CBN

Also called: Cannabinol

CBN can form as THC ages and oxidizes. It is often marketed for sleep, but consumer claims are stronger than the available evidence.

Generally Non-Intoxicating

CBC

Also called: Cannabichromene

CBC is a minor cannabinoid found in some cannabis products. Human research remains limited compared with THC and CBD.

Dose-Dependent Interest

THCV

Also called: Tetrahydrocannabivarin

THCV is structurally related to THC but does not behave identically. Its effects may depend on dose and product composition.

Generally Non-Intoxicating

CBDV

Also called: Cannabidivarin

CBDV is related to CBD and appears in smaller amounts in many products. Research is still emerging.

Acidic Precursor

CBCA

Also called: Cannabichromenic acid

CBCA is the acidic precursor to CBC and may convert into CBC when exposed to heat.

Minor Variant

CBGV

Also called: Cannabigerovarin

CBGV is a less common cannabinoid related to CBG. Most consumers will see it only on detailed laboratory reports.

Also called: Cannabichromevarin

CBCV is a lesser-known cannabinoid related to CBC. Consumer products rarely feature it as the primary cannabinoid.

Delta-8, Delta-9, and Delta-10 THC

Intoxicating

Delta-8 THC

Delta-8 THC can produce psychoactive / intoxicating effects. Commercial products vary widely in strength, formulation, and testing.

Delta-9 THC

Delta-9 is the primary intoxicating THC commonly measured in cannabis and the form most people mean when they simply say “THC.”

Delta-10 THC

Delta-10 THC is sold in some hemp-derived markets. Research, product consistency, and regulation are limited.

Understanding Ratios

What Does 1:1, 2:1, or 20:1 Mean?

A ratio compares the listed amounts of two cannabinoids, usually CBD and THC.

1:1

Equal Listed Amounts

A 1:1 CBD-to-THC product lists roughly equal amounts of CBD and THC.

2:1

Twice as Much of the First

A 2:1 CBD-to-THC product lists about twice as much CBD as THC.

20:1

Mostly the First Cannabinoid

A 20:1 CBD-to-THC product contains far more CBD than THC, but the actual milligrams still matter.

Ratios do not tell you the dose. A 1:1 product containing 2.5 mg of each cannabinoid is very different from one containing 50 mg of each.

Find the Product Type

Flower, edibles, concentrates, and vape cartridges may report cannabinoid amounts differently.

Look for Total THC

Flower labels may show THCA, Delta-9 THC, and a calculated Total THC value.

Check Units

Flower often uses percentages, while edibles usually use milligrams per serving and per package.

Do Not Ignore Minor Cannabinoids

CBG, CBN, CBC, THCV, and other entries may appear in small amounts, but the research is still developing.

Good to Know

Marketing Claims May Be Stronger Than the Evidence

“Sleep cannabinoid” does not mean a product is proven to improve sleep.

“Energy cannabinoid” does not guarantee stimulation or better focus.

Hemp-derived does not automatically mean non-intoxicating.

Minor cannabinoid research often relies on laboratory or animal studies rather than strong human evidence.
