What is a cannabis vape cartridge?
A cannabis vape cartridge, often called a cart, is a small container filled with cannabis oil or extract. It attaches to a battery that heats the oil and creates vapor that is inhaled.
A cart does not contain loose flower or bud. The marijuana plant has already been processed so selected cannabinoids, terpenes, and oils can be collected and prepared for the cartridge.
Vape cartridges can vary greatly in strength, ingredients, flavor, extract type, hardware quality, size, and price.
From Plant to Cartridge
How cannabis becomes vape oil
Vape oil begins with cannabis plant material. Different processing methods create different extracts, but the basic path is similar.
1. Cannabis is harvested
The process begins with the cannabis plant. Depending on the product, the flower may be dried and cured or frozen soon after harvest.
2. The plant is prepared
Dried marijuana may be used for distillate or cured extracts. Freshly harvested flower may be frozen for products described as live resin or live rosin.
3. Compounds are separated
Some licensed processors use a controlled extraction process to separate cannabinoids, terpenes, and oils from the plant material.
Another route: pressing
Rosin is produced without an extraction solvent. Plant material or separated trichomes are pressed with heat and pressure to release a thick extract.
4. The extract is prepared
The extract may be filtered, refined, or blended so it has the consistency and composition needed for the intended cartridge.
5. The cartridge is filled
The finished cannabis oil is placed into cartridge hardware with a mouthpiece and heating element, then packaged and labeled.
Common Extract Types
Distillate, live resin, and live rosin
These names help describe how the cannabis (marijuana) extract was prepared.

Distillate is highly refined to concentrate selected cannabinoids, commonly THC. Terpenes may be added or blended back into the oil afterward.

Live resin normally begins with cannabis that is frozen soon after harvest. A controlled solvent-based extraction process is then used to collect cannabinoids and aromatic compounds.

Live rosin also commonly begins with fresh-frozen cannabis. Trichomes are mechanically separated and pressed using heat and pressure without an extraction solvent.

The Basic Parts
Cartridges, batteries, and disposable vapes
Some vape products use a separate cartridge and battery. Others combine everything into one disposable device.
Vape cartridge
The cartridge holds the cannabis oil and normally includes a mouthpiece, tank, heating element, and battery connection.
Vape battery
The battery supplies power to the heating element. Some use one fixed setting, while others let the user adjust voltage or temperature.
510-thread cartridge
The 510 thread is a common screw-style connection. A compatible cartridge is screwed onto a separate battery.
Disposable vape
A disposable combines the oil, heating element, battery, and mouthpiece into one unit. Some can be recharged, but the cartridge is not replaced.
Pod systems
Some companies use pods or cartridges that work only with their own battery. These are called proprietary systems.
Cartridge size
Common sizes include 0.5 gram and 1 gram, although disposable vapes and pods may be sold in other sizes.
Other Oil Formats
Syringes, refill oils, and RSO
Some cannabis extracts are sold in syringe-style applicators instead of a pre-filled cartridge. The product inside the syringe determines how it is intended to be used.

Some dispensary syringes contain distillate or another oil that the manufacturer specifically identifies as suitable for filling compatible refillable cartridges. Not every cartridge is designed to be opened or refilled.

What to look for before buying
The label should help explain the strength, extract type, ingredients, and amount of oil in the product.
THC
Vape cartridges often contain a higher THC percentage than flower or bud. More THC can increase the chance of a strong psychoactive or intoxicating experience.
CBD and ratios
Some products contain CBD along with THC. A 1:1 product contains similar amounts of THC and CBD, but it may still be intoxicating.
Terpenes
Terpenes help create aroma and flavor and may influence the experience reported by some consumers.

Start low

Common Problems
Clogging, leaking, and burnt taste
Clogging
Thick oil can collect in the airway. Gentle warming and slow inhalation may help, but avoid pulling forcefully on a clogged cartridge.
Leaking
Heat, pressure changes, damaged seals, or storing a cartridge on its side may contribute to leaking.
Burnt taste
A burnt taste may mean the voltage is too high, the cartridge is nearly empty, or oil is not reaching the heating element.
Heat exposure
Avoid leaving a cart in a hot vehicle or direct sunlight. Excessive heat can thin the oil and damage the product.
